I’ve gotten a few emails asking that question now so I figured I’d post this for everybody. Here’s what I carry on my Improved Outer Tactical Vest…
- Improved First Aid Kit, or IFAK
- 2 x 15 round magazines for the M9 pistol
- Multiband Inter/Intra Team Radio, or MBITR
- 6 x 30 round magazines for the M4 rifle
- 2 x 40mm HEDP rounds for the M203 grenade launcher
- Strap cutter, for cutting seatbelts or gear in an emergency
- This one’s hard to see in this picture, but it’s a SPOON! For digging foxholes and field latrines.
- Quick-release to separate the vest into 4 pieces for quick removal
- Random stuff pouch. Right now there’s an extra set of gloves, a cold-weather hat, some misc cables and a couple 40mm smoke grenades
- Casio Exilim EX-S10! Never leave home without it.
- Ear plugs, so I don’t have to listen to whining about broken comm equipment.
- Photon Proton Flashlight cause I’m scared of the dark.
- Gerber Multitool
- Back to the top picture, one-handed tourniquet
So that’s what I carry on my vest. Total weight is just north of 60lbs but the vest is so well designed that it really only feels like 55lbs when you have it on.

I think I could get most of that stuff in my purse. Your “spoon” for the latrine makes for an odd mental picture.

That’d be a big purse… And so far the only thing I’ve really used that spoon for was to wrap a rag around it and clean out some radio contacts in a truck.

When you get back, can I have item #12. I want to use to to make a Proton Pak like the Ghostbusters.

Hi, do you have just 6 mags on you? Is it enough and I’ve heard that soldiers usually carry about 12 magazines. Thanks
