Back in Jalalabad

Posted February 27th, 2009 by Mike

I finally made it back to FOB Finley-Shields. Traveling in Afghanistan sucks, we got bumped from 2 different flights out of Bagram, ended up being up all night, finally caught a flight at 0600 back to FOB Fenty. We called to get a ride back to FOB Finley-Shields at 0700. At 0900 we were still sitting out of the flightline at Fenty waiting for our ride. I called back and was told that they were just going to pick us up when they came at 1200 to get mail… We ended up sleeping on the ground beside the runway for an hour or so until SSgt Burtch saw a couple trucks from the Agriculture Development Team (ADT) who are also at FOB Finley-Shields. He went and talked to them and it turned out they had 3 empty seats and were headed back right then. So we hopped a ride with them. It was nice to sleep in my own bed again! It ended up taking me 16 or 17 days for my 4 day pass…

    Mike,

I have enjoyed your blog. It is very descriptive and with the pictures it becomes very real. Your blog came to my attention recently when you wrote about FOB Finley-Shields. Andrew Shields is my son for which the FOB was named after. Thank you for your service… We pray for your safe return to your family. Good luck and God Speed…

Hey bud, your down at fenty? What are living conditions like? I’m one of the K-9 teams coming down there just wondering what to expect. Take care.

Mike are you still in Jalalabad? My son, SPC Aaron Walth, is there as part of the PRT. He has only been there a month. I am keeping tabs on him on Facebook. It is nice to see some other faces serving there and maybe hear some other info that my son may not tell us. If you run into a tall thin “kid” (looks young-he’s 24) say “hey”.
Thanks for serving. Am praying for all to go well there.

Mike – I spent a year at that PRT in 04 – 05 when it was just starting to get set up. Hope the living conditions have improved and stay safe.

    Hello Mike,

I’ve found the information reference to the billeting and assorted things on the FOB interesting is there anything else you can add. When you departed what were the conditions? How’s the weather throughout the year? What ideas would you advise someone to take with them if they were deploying there?
